Major network operators and large enterprises globally have announced plans to adopt a software-centric networking strategy and embarked on a time-bound roadmap to transform their networks and organizations to the software-centric and cloud-based paradigm.
Back in 2013, AT&T announced a plan to have 75 of its wireline and wireless network running on SDN, NFV, and cloud platforms by 2020. As part of that shift, AT&T adopted plans for a full-scale organizational transformation to ensure that its business processes, workforce skills, and culture is aligned and able to support its new software-centric and DevOps-driven strategy. This massive workforce transformation initiative, dubbed Workforce 2020, will enable AT&T’s 130,000-strong work force to boost their skills for the software-centric era.
While AT&T took the lead publicly, all other major players such as Verizon, NTT Communication, and Etisalat, among others, have announced similar plans and roadmaps as they shift to the software-centric and cloud-based paradigm.
